How your Indiana paycheck is calculated
Indiana state income tax (2.95%)
Employers follow Departmental Notice #1: subtract the WH-4 exemption deduction constants from each paycheck, then multiply taxable wages by 2.95%. Personal exemptions are $1,000 each per year (line 5); additional and first-time dependents $1,500 each (lines 6–7); adopted child dependents $3,000 each (line 8). Official example: $800 weekly with five personal, three additional, one first-time and two adopted exemptions → taxable $473.08 × 2.95% = $13.96 state tax.
Indiana county income tax
The same taxable wages are multiplied by your county rate. Rates range from 0.5% (Porter) to 3.0% (Randolph). Use your county of residence on January 1; if you lived outside Indiana that day, use the Indiana county where you principally work. County rates can change each January and October.
Pre-tax deductions
Traditional 401(k) and Section 125 contributions reduce Indiana taxable wages for state and county income-tax withholding in this calculator (Indiana starts from federal AGI).
Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare
Federal withholding uses the IRS 2026 percentage method for automated payroll systems (Publication 15-T, Worksheet 1A). Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to the $184,500 wage base, and Medicare is 1.45% of all wages plus 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on wages above $200,000. Per-paycheck Social Security and Medicare are shown as a yearly average: if you pass the wage base, your later paychecks will show none.
What this calculator does not include
This estimate does not cover bonuses or other supplemental wages, multiple jobs, Roth (after-tax) contributions, HSA payroll contributions, wage garnishments, or tips and overtime deductions unless you enter them on Form W-4 Step 4(b). County rates follow Departmental Notice #1 effective October 1, 2026 and may change in January or October. The 30-day nonresident withholding exception is not modeled. See the methodology for details.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Indiana state income tax rate for 2026?
2.95% of adjusted gross income for taxable years beginning in 2026 (Indiana Department of Revenue). It is scheduled to fall to 2.90% in 2027.
How much is each WH-4 exemption worth?
For withholding: $1,000 a year per personal exemption (line 5), $1,500 per additional or first-time dependent exemption (lines 6–7), and $3,000 per adopted child dependent (line 8), divided by the number of pay periods.
Which county tax rate should I use?
Your Indiana county of residence on January 1 of the tax year. If you lived out of state on January 1 but work in Indiana, use the county of your principal place of work. Rates in this calculator are from Departmental Notice #1 effective October 1, 2026.
Does this include local option income taxes beyond the county chart?
The county rates in Departmental Notice #1 are what employers withhold. Other local fees are not modeled.
How is federal income tax withholding calculated?
We follow Worksheet 1A of IRS Publication 15-T (2026) for a 2020-or-later Form W-4: your taxable pay is annualized, adjusted by the Form W-4 entries (Step 2 checkbox, Step 3 credits, Step 4 other income, deductions and extra withholding), run through the 2026 percentage-method table for your filing status, and divided back by your number of paychecks. Our engine reproduces all 4,350 cells of the IRS 2026 wage-bracket tables for weekly, biweekly, semimonthly and monthly pay.
Why does Social Security stop at $184,500?
For 2026 the Social Security (OASDI) wage base is $184,500 (SSA). The 6.2% employee tax applies only to wages up to that amount each year. Medicare (1.45%) has no cap, and employers must withhold an extra 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on wages above $200,000 in the year, regardless of filing status.
Is withholding the same as the tax I will owe?
No. Withholding is an estimate taken from each paycheck. Your actual tax is settled when you file your return and depends on all your income, deductions and credits, so you may get a refund or owe more.
