How it works
Formula
Tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100, rounded to the nearest cent. Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ number of people (also rounded to the cent). In the U.S., tip is customarily figured on the pre-tax meal price; enter the amount before sales tax if your receipt separates them.
Worked example
On an $86.50 bill with an 18% tip: tip = $86.50 × 0.18 = $15.57, total = $102.07. Split three ways: $34.02 each ($5.19 tip + $28.83 of the bill).
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant in the U.S.?
15%–20% of the pre-tax bill is typical for sit-down service. 18%–20% is common for good service; 15% for average. Some restaurants add an automatic gratuity for large parties — check the bill before adding more.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
U.S. custom is to tip on the pre-tax price. If your receipt shows tax separately, use the subtotal. Delivery apps and some salons may suggest a tip on the post-tax total — follow the prompt or your own preference.
What if we split unevenly?
This calculator divides the tip and total evenly. For uneven splits, figure the tip on the full bill first, then decide how to share it.
